Background

The biomedical field has witnessed significant advancement in the development of implantable devices, driven by the rising prevalence of degenerative diseases and traumatic injuries. This surge in demand has especially impacted orthopedics, dentistry, and cardiovascular medicine, resulting in a growing need for high-performance materials and innovative approaches to improve implant integration and durability. Although conventional implant materials offer satisfactory mechanical and physical properties, they often face limitations when interacting within complex biological environments, potentially compromising their effectiveness and longevity. As a result, current research has turned towards the development of new biomaterials and the optimization of surface coatings that can enhance both the physicochemical characteristics and the biological responses of implants, ultimately striving to achieve more reliable and longer-lasting clinical outcomes.

The main goal in this area is to generate implants that not only possess mechanical properties similar to human bone but also support seamless interaction with surrounding tissues. Achieving such synergy depends heavily on advanced coating technologies, which can provide implant surfaces with bioactivity, antibacterial properties, and protective barriers against corrosion and wear. This Research Topic aims to showcase cutting-edge studies that present innovative solutions to reduce the risk of implant failure and adverse biological responses, emphasizing how advanced coatings can be engineered to meet stringent clinical requirements and elevate the performance of next-generation implants.

This Research Topic focuses on the development, characterization, and clinical implications of advanced coatings for biomedical implants, with an emphasis on both functional and biological enhancement. To gather further insights within these boundaries, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Development and characterization of bioactive coatings designed to stimulate biological responses

- Prevention of implant-associated infections through antibacterial coatings

- Investigations into the corrosion and tribo-corrosion behavior of coated materials

- Creation of multifunctional coatings with combined anticorrosive, antibacterial, and bioactive properties

- Modeling and simulation methods for optimizing biomaterial coating performance

- Reviews offering perspectives on the current state of research and highlighting future directions in the field
