Functional Nanomaterials for Healthcare and Biomedical Applications

About this Research Topic

In recent decades, advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology have led to the generation of numerous functional nanomaterials and their various types of applications in biosensors, wearable/implantable nanodevices, drug delivery, therapeutics and imaging technologies. For example, nanomaterials such as metal nanoparticles/clusters, semiconductor quantum dots, polymer nanodots, transition metal oxide/sulfide nanosheets and nanocarbons have been synthesized and adopted for highly sensitive and specific analytical platforms, to provide alternative approaches to conventional biosensing and imaging methods in order to prevent morbidity and mortality. Accurate and early diagnosis will be able to help physicians identify a disease as early as possible and increase the curing rate.

In addition, nanomaterials with different shapes and compositions not only provide a high surface-to-volume ratio for binding and loading high-density biochemical/small molecules, but also possess exceptional physical and chemical properties for drug delivery and therapeutic applications. Therefore, more and more new potential nanomaterials have been discovered and developed for use in modern healthcare in recent years.

This Research Topic seeks to cover recent achievements in functional nanomaterials, with emphasis on therapeutics, medical devices, and diagnostics, including:

 • Enzyme-mimic nanoparticles
 • Nanocomposites and their emerging properties
 • Application of nanomaterials on drug delivery systems
 • Development of bioimaging technologies based on fluorescent nanomaterials
 • Application of nanomaterials on rapid diagnostic devices
 • Biomedical applications of nanomaterials as therapeutics
 • Integration of nanomaterials for wearable/implantable nanodevices
 • Self-powered nanosensors and nanosystems
