Luminescent Materials Compatible with MOS Technologies: Development and Applications

About this Research Topic

Silicon lasers, optoelectronic and photonic functions integrated with silicon compatible light emitters, more efficient photovoltaic devices, electro-optical conversion, solid state lighting, etc. are a few of the many applications anticipated for luminescent materials compatible with silicon Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) technology. Despite the high expectation produced for such material, currently only a few applications have been reported, and much less are commercially available. Consequently, materials compatible with MOS technology containing nanostructures and having luminescent properties are nowadays one of the most exciting research topics.

Despite the enormous efforts, denoted by countless studies published on the development of different luminescent silicon compounds materials and arrays, an efficient electroluminescent transformation process and the production of a compact, reliable and efficient integrated optoelectronic structure are far from being achieved. Then, to reach the whole potential of these materials with silicon technologies, it is still necessary to solve problems as basic as to have a better understanding of the emission mechanisms; as well as technological problems to avoid the negative effects between the MOS technology and silicon luminescent materials.

In order to step forward in the development, understanding and applying of such materials, the purpose of this Research Topic is to review and gather together the latest knowledge on silicon compatible luminescent materials and their application on devices and circuits. Authors are encouraged to submit original research and review articles on the mentioned subjects, or related to them. This call for paper is open, but not exclusively, to the following topics:

- Synthesis and characterization of luminescent materials
- Nanostructured materials and devices
- Luminescence mechanisms
- Integration with MOS technologies
- Electroluminescence devices and characterization
- Photonic integration with Silicon technologies
- Multilayers and waveguides
- Rare-Earth doping
