Background

The batteries and electrochemistry field generates enormous volumes of experimental data - cycling curves, degradation trajectories, electrochemical impedance spectra, formation protocols, and materials characterisation datasets - yet the vast majority remains siloed in lab servers, inconsistently formatted, or deposited in basic repositories without the metadata needed for reuse. This lack of structured, machine-actionable data is a bottleneck for AI-driven discovery, reproducible science, and the kind of cross-lab benchmarking the field urgently needs.

This Research Topic invites FAIR² Data Articles reporting high-value datasets in batteries and electrochemistry. FAIR² (FAIR Squared) extends the established FAIR principles — Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable — by adding AI-readiness, ethical governance, and a structured specification that makes datasets ready for computational analysis and machine learning. Each submission produces a peer-reviewed, citable article alongside an interactive data portal, giving researchers formal recognition for data they have already generated.

We welcome datasets covering, but not limited to: lithium-ion, sodium-ion, solid-state, and next-generation battery chemistries; electrochemical cycling and ageing studies (calendar and cycle); electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS); formation protocols; fast-charging experiments; real-world electric vehicle usage data; electrode and electrolyte characterisation; and battery management or state estimation datasets. Datasets from any scale - coin cell to pack - are in scope.

By collecting these contributions within a single Research Topic, we aim to build a curated, community-accessible resource that accelerates data-driven battery research, supports funder mandates (such as NIH, Horizon Europe, UKRI), and raises the visibility and citation impact of the experimental work underpinning the field’s progress.
