The Major Discoveries of Cajal and His Disciples: Consolidated Milestones for the Neuroscience of the XXIst Century, Volume I. Indeed, in view of the success of Volume I, Frontiers has decided - in agreement with the Topic Editors - to launch this Second Edition.

In Volume I, part of the achievements by Santiago Ramón y Cajal to unravel the fine structure of the nervous system in the last decade of the XIXth and early XXth centuries (compiled in his opus magna published in 1904 -“Textura del sistema nervioso del hombre y los vertebrados”- and 1911 -“Histologie du système nerveux”-), as well as by his direct disciples along most of the XXth century (from Tello to Lorente de Nó) were reviewed since the current perspective of neuroscientific knowledge. Rara avis in Science, most if not all the main discoveries by Cajal and his disciples remain valid to date: this confirms the relevance of the Spanish Neurological School that Cajal wanted to grow around and after him, their collective success in transforming not only Histology but Physiology, Neurology, Cybernetics or even Psychiatry, nowadays. As we claimed and demonstrated with Volume I, it is difficult (if not impossible) to find a school in biology contributing in such a fundamental and variated way to the common acervo like the collectively known Cajal School or Spanish Neurological School. The purpose of this second volume of the Research Topic is to complete those aspects that were not addressed in the previous one (ex.: Gonzalo R. Lafora), either regarding Cajal himself or any other of the main (and not so main...) figures of his School to honor minutiousity, constantness, brilliantness, imagination and intelligence of these scientists many times working in difficult conditions and with minimal support.
