Background

Frontiers in Agronomy is delighted to present the ‘Reviews in’ series of Research Topics. ‘Reviews in’ is a series being launched across Frontiers in Agronomy’s sections which aims to publish high-quality review articles on key topics within the field. The goal of this series is to highlight recent advances across agronomic disciplines, whilst emphasising important directions and new possibilities for future inquiry. We anticipate the research presented will promote discussion within the broader agronomy community and translate to best practice applications in research, industry, and policy settings.

The Field Water Management section covers the strategies, technologies, and policies needed to manage water in agricultural systems, spanning irrigation scheduling, sensor- and remote sensing-based monitoring, rainfed production, and the sustainable intensification of cropping. As global agriculture faces growing water scarcity, climate variability, and rising demand for high-quality food, the need for rigorous, synthesised knowledge on field water management has never been greater. Reviews in Field Water Management brings together high-quality scholarly review articles that map the current state of the science, identify critical knowledge gaps, and chart directions for the development of efficient, equitable, and sustainable water management solutions.

The Reviews in Field Water Management collection welcomes Review, Mini-Review, and Systematic Review articles on topics within the scope of the Field Water Management section. Topics considered in scope include, but are not limited to:

• effects of irrigation on water use efficiency and crop productivity

• field water management for rainfed agriculture

• irrigation management for different crops, soils, and agroecosystems

• remote sensing-based soil water monitoring and irrigation scheduling

• sensor-based field water monitoring and management

• sustainable intensification of rainfed/irrigated agriculture

• water use efficiency and crop productivity of rainfed agriculture.

New articles will be visible in the collection as they are accepted for publication.
