Agrobiodiversity and Sustainability in Tropical Agroecosystem

The agrobiodiversity is an essential component for the sustainability of tropical agroecosystems, as it contributes to the conservation of plant genetic resources, food security, climate resilience, and the maintenance of ecosystem services. In tropical regions, traditional, agroforestry, and agroecological farming systems harbor a wide diversity of cultivated, wild, semi-cultivated, and managed species, whose ecological, cultural, and productive value is fundamental for addressing current environmental and social challenges. The Research Topic “Agrobiodiversity and Sustainability in Tropical Agroecosystems” seeks to bring together scientific contributions that analyze the conservation, management, and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity in tropical agroecosystems. Manuscripts are invited that address interdisciplinary approaches related to plant conservation, genetic resources, agroecology, agroforestry systems, climate resilience, the sustainability of agri-food systems, and the strengthening of rural and Indigenous communities. This topic aims to create a space for international scientific discussion on the role of agrobiodiversity in building more sustainable, resilient, and socially inclusive agroecosystems, contributing to the development of conservation and sustainable management strategies in tropical contexts.

Tropical agroecosystems are among the most biologically and culturally diverse production systems in the world; however, they are increasingly threatened by biodiversity loss, climate change, land-use change, genetic erosion, and the simplification of agricultural landscapes. These challenges affect the conservation of plant genetic resources, food security, ecosystem services, and the resilience of rural and Indigenous communities. The objective of this Research Topic, “Agrobiodiversity and Sustainability in Tropical Agroecosystems,” is to address the need for integrated scientific approaches that promote the conservation, sustainable management, and use of agrobiodiversity in tropical contexts. This Research Topic aims to bring together studies that contribute to understanding how agrobiodiversity supports ecological sustainability, climate resilience, agroecological transitions, agroforestry systems, and sustainable agri-food systems. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, this collection seeks to generate knowledge, strategies, and practical solutions to strengthen plant conservation and the sustainability of tropical agroecosystems.

This Research Topic will welcome manuscripts focused on the conservation, management, and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity in tropical agroecosystems. Contributions may address topics related to plant conservation, plant genetic resources, traditional knowledge, agroecology, agroforestry systems, climate resilience, ecosystem services, sustainable agri-food systems, as well as in situ and ex situ conservation strategies. In addition, works integrating participatory approaches aimed at strengthening rural and Indigenous communities, recognized as guardians of genetic resources and associated biocultural knowledge, will also be considered. Manuscripts that integrate ecological, agronomic, social, cultural, and technological perspectives are particularly encouraged. Studies conducted in tropical regions around the world are welcome, especially those that provide innovative approaches, comparative analyses, community-based experiences, or practical strategies to strengthen sustainability, climate resilience, and biodiversity conservation in agroecosystems.
