The Environmental Informatics and Remote Sensing section aims to develop and apply advanced technologies for environmental data management and analysis. Yet despite the growing volume of satellite imagery, sensor networks, UAV surveys, and spatial datasets produced by the community, a large share of this data remains siloed, poorly documented, or formatted in ways that prevent automated reuse. This Research Topic addresses that gap directly.
By anchoring this collection in the Environmental Informatics and Remote Sensing section, we aim to build a structured, openly accessible corpus of datasets that directly serves the section’s core topics: remote sensing of the environment, GIS and spatial information technologies, environmental monitoring across water, air and soil, artificial intelligence and big data applications, mathematical methods for inverse problems, and UAV and AUV observational data.
Submissions are invited for FAIR2 Data articles covering any of the following areas, provided they emphasize an informatics or remote sensing dimension:
• Calibrated and annotated satellite or airborne imagery datasets for land cover, atmosphere, or ocean monitoring • GIS and spatial reference datasets enabling environmental decision support • Quality controlled sensor time series from water, air, or soil monitoring networks • UAV or AUV collected observational datasets with full metadata and processing documentation • Training and benchmark datasets for computer vision, machine learning, or statistical inverse problem methods applied to environmental data • Metadata schemas, curation workflows, or data management pipelines that advance reproducibility and interoperability in environmental informatics
Datasets without a clear informatics or remote sensing component are outside the scope of this section and will not be considered.
