Bariatric and metabolic surgery has been demonstrated to provide rapid and sustained weight loss and also remission in type 2 diabetes. However, there is limited evidence regarding the effect of bariatric/metabolic surgery on other obesity-related diseases, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, etc. In addition, although some factors are involved in the remission of obesity and its comorbidities after surgery, such as gastrointestinal hormones, bile acid metabolism, gut microbiota, and gut-brain-liver axis, the specific mechanisms remain unclear as well. Moreover, the effects and side-effects of new technologies and procedures need to be evaluated, since poor postoperative effects or recurrence were seen in a proportion of patients, suggesting that more factors should be taken into consideration. Here, we especially encourage the submission of studies that advance our knowledge on the impact of bariatric/metabolic surgery on obesity and related diseases. Also, more detailed investigations should be conducted to reveal relevant mechanisms.
This Research Topic aims to provide new or strong evidence to advance our knowledge on the impact of bariatric/metabolic surgery on obesity and related diseases through large-scale clinical trials. It is also devoted to evaluating the effects and side effects of new bariatric/metabolic technologies or procedures, proposing corresponding countermeasures for poor postoperative effect or recurrence, to reveal the relevant mechanisms through clinical trials or basic research.
In this Research Topic, we welcome the submission of Original Research and evidence-based Perspective articles on the following sub-topics including, but not limited to: - The effects and mechanisms of bariatric surgery on obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSHAS), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and other obesity-related diseases - Predictors of the effect of bariatric surgery on obesity and related diseases - Revisional surgery for obesity and related diseases - Application and effect evaluation of new bariatric/metabolic operation approach or technique on obesity and related diseases
Review articles will only be considered if they are exceptional, systematic reviews; narrative reviews are outside the scope of this Research Topic. Please note that meta-analyses, Mendelian Randomization studies, and bibliometric analyses are not within the scope of this journal and will not be considered for publication.
