Family Dynamics After the Welfare System: Lifelong Development, Adaptation, and Resilience

The transition from state protection systems into permanent family-based care - such as adoption or foster care - represents a pivotal shift that reshapes an individual's developmental trajectory across the entire lifespan. While early intervention research is extensive, there is a critical need to examine how these relational dynamics evolve from early childhood through adolescence and into full adulthood. The "post-placement" phase is not a static destination but a continuous process of psychological integration, identity formation, and attachment reorganization. Individuals who have experienced the welfare system navigate unique developmental challenges related to their history of adversity and the construction of new familial bonds. By adopting a life-cycle lens, this Research Topic explores how the quality of family-based care and systemic stability influence psychological health, relational patterns, and resilience at every stage of human development.

The primary objective of this Research Topic is to bridge the gap between initial placement experiences and long-term developmental outcomes throughout the life course. It aims to address the interplay between early adversity, relational continuity, and the adjustment of individuals in adoption and foster care. Our understanding of how these dynamics manifest in adulthood, specifically regarding intimacy, intergenerational parenting, and lifelong identity integration, remains fragmented. This collection seeks to consolidate diverse empirical evidence to identify the protective factors that promote healthy maturation and stability over time. The topic intends to provide a platform for research that examines the middle and long-term viability of permanent placements. Studies that explore how family structures and support systems adapt to the changing needs of individuals as they transition through the various milestones of the life cycle are welcomed.

This collection also welcomes clinical social work perspectives looking at families in situations of high complexity – particularly in relation to therapeutic alliance, relational interventions, and family support in child protection and other vulnerable context. This includes research in understanding family resilience and intervention following involvement with welfare systems.

While this Research Topic centres on the ongoing progression of family dynamics post-state care, it does not address pre-placement factors or the logistics of child welfare policies except where these affect long-term relational outcomes. To gather further insights on these boundaries, articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes are welcome:

• Attachment and identity trajectories from childhood to adulthood in non-biological family arrangements.
• Lifelong psychosocial impacts of early adversity and the buffering role of family-based care.
•Relational patterns, parenting experiences, and social integration in adulthood among adoptees and former foster youth.
• Long-term effectiveness of post-placement support systems and interventions for placement stability
• Intergenerational processes of attachment and trauma within adoptive and foster family systems.
• Clinical social work approaches to therapeutic alliance and relational intervention with families in high-complexity or child protection contexts.
