About this Research Topic
Unequivocal evidence supports chronic activation of the sympathetic nervous system as a characteristic of hypertension and its participation in the initiation, maintenance and progression of blood pressure in experimental animal and human studies. Recently SPYRAL HTN ON-MED and SPYRAL HTN OFF-MED have demonstrated the efficacy of renal denervation as an antihypertensive strategy in sham-controlled trials. A major scientific and clinical challenge is to unveil the causes of sympathetic over-activation. With this Research Topic we aim to discuss and find answers to the following research question:
What are pathological stimuli that activate and/or exacerbate sympathetic activity in hypertension?
We aim to attract high impact contributions that will address and discuss recent new insights in the pathophysiological relationship between sympathetic nerve activity (renal and cardiac), inflammation, tissue perfusion and the hypertensive state. If we understand more about the pathological stimuli leading to sympathetic activation, its regulation and consequences in hypertension, we might be able to have a major impact in clinical practice, i.e. more accurate and earlier diagnosis, novel treatment targets, and personalized novel therapies.
