Puberty is a period of notable physical and emotional changes that result to sexual maturity. To a great extend these changes are controlled by genetic, nutritional and environmental factors. Recent advances in genetic technology have provided strong evidence on the implication of the genetic makeup in pubertal timing and identified numerous genes with a robust influence in the general population in both sexes and across ethnic groups. To date, several single genes have been associated in both precocious and delayed puberty and their precise mechanisms for how they influence pubertal timing are still under investigation.
The diagnosis of abnormal puberty needs a good understanding of normal pubertal development and its chronological course, therefore an explicit investigation of the genetic and molecular basis of the factors that affect puberty is necessary.

The present Research Topic titled: `The Genetic and Molecular Basis of Precocious and Delayed Puberty' is welcoming manuscripts in the format of reviews and/or original studies. Τhe manuscripts should focus on the latest advances of the genetic basis underlying variation in normal pubertal timing, precocious puberty and delayed puberty.

Issues related to the main theme of puberty such as the onset and clinical expression, neuroendocrine factors, role of endocrine disruptors, gene implication and heritability and treatment are some of the ones expected to be elaborated. Manuscripts also discussing the molecular mechanisms involved in pubertal timing are also welcomed. Such manuscripts could elaborate on the role of signalling molecules and receptors in the promotion of GnRH neuronal secretion and the epigenetic regulation of puberty.
