About this Research Topic
Environmental stress influences survival, growth and reproduction in aquatic organisms, especially intertidal algae that are usually exposed to various kinds of environmental changes in, for instance, temperature, salinity, nutrition and sunlight. Thus, the life history strategy of intertidal algae, which consists of growth and reproductive phases, could be regulated by the acquisition of environmental stress tolerance to protect organisms from disadvantageous conditions. In this respect, a life cycle trade-off was considered to explain how algae control their life history strategy by choosing growth or reproductive phase under stress conditions. However, the regulatory mechanisms of the life cycle trade-off are almost unknown in algae. To resolve this situation, it is necessary to understand the physiological and molecular aspects of the regulation of growth, cell division, morphogenesis, stress response, stress tolerance, their life cycle and reproduction. In particular, knowledge of the involvement of environmental stress in determining the timing of reproduction in the life cycle is required to improve our understanding of life-history strategy in algae. Thus, we aim to establish an integrated view on regulations of stress acclimation and the life cycle.
This Research Topic, therefore, welcomes the latest findings on the physiological, biochemical, and molecular aspects of the stimulation of growth, cell division, morphogenesis and life cycle by biotic and abiotic stresses in both micro- and macro-algae. Studies focusing on freshwater algae, especially microalgae, are also welcome. In addition, research related to the regulation of polarity, tip growth, parthenogenesis, production and fertilization of gametes, generation transition in the life cycle and biosynthesis and physiological roles of plant hormones is also invited. These provide significant hints to understanding environmental stress-dependent life history strategy based on the life cycle trade-off in algae.
