About this Research Topic
Surface electromagnetic (EM) waves, decaying away from an interface between two different materials/structures, bring both rich physics and applications. Research into surface EM modes dates back to Sommerfeld-Zenneck waves propagating along the surface between dielectric and conducting materials. Other surface EM modes from different mechanisms have also captured interest, including Dyakonov modes, surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), and recently emerging spoof SPP and topological edge modes from metamaterials and photonic crystals respectively. Emergent phenomena from surface EM modes are attracting much interest, for instance nonlinear plasmonics and quantum plasmonics. Practically, surface EM modes have also derived various applications, such as extraordinary optical transmission, laser collimation, harmonic generation, topological EM waveguides, topological lasing, etc.
This Research Topic will focus on surface EM modes from fundamental physics to applications. The Research Topic welcomes submissions in a list of themes including but not limited to:
1. Physics giving rise to novel surface EM modes, e.g. topological EM modes,
2. Nonlinear EM effects from surface EM modes,
3. Quantum EM effects from surface EM modes,
4. Practical applications of various surface EM modes.
