Neurologists’ knowledge of the expanding spectrum of infectious and immune-mediated encephalitides is a growing necessity in clinical practice. The impact of increasing globalization and expansion into previously undeveloped areas has led to the emergence of several viruses with a predilection for central nervous system (CNS) involvement. In parallel, the expansion of our knowledge of immune-mediated causes of encephalitis has led to growing complexity in defining the underlying causes of brain inflammation. With the expanded use of immunomodulators in various disease processes and immunotherapy in cancers, we are identifying a growing spectrum of previously unrecognized immune-mediated causes of CNS inflammation.
Despite recent advances in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for infectious and autoimmune encephalitis, the management of patients with suspected or confirmed encephalitis poses a great challenge to physicians. In this Research Topic we aim to provide novel scientific data around laboratory testing for infectious and immune-mediate encephalitis, and aim to identify approaches in high risk patient populations, including those who are immunocompromised. We also aim to highlight emerging and re-emerging viral encephalitides and considerations in the pediatric population.
For this Research Topic we welcome submissions of articles related to the following themes:
1. Novel laboratory approaches to infectious and immune-mediated encephalitides;
2. Neuroimaging in infectious and immune-mediated encephalitides;
3. Differential diagnosis of acute infectious encephalitis;
4. Global emerging and re-emerging viral encephalitides;
5. Encephalitis in the immunocompromised population;
6. Acute encephalitis in the pediatric population.
