Autoimmune neurological disorders represent a rapidly expanding – and frequently treatable – area of human disease, encompassing paraneoplastic neurological disorders, syndromes of autoimmune neurological injury occurring in patients without underlying neoplasia and, most recently, syndromes of autoimmune neurological injury arising in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Important issues in this exciting new field include mechanisms of neuronal injury; differences in pathogenesis between disorders associated with antibodies to cell membrane antigens and those associated with antibodies to intracellular neuronal proteins; and the association of these conditions with infection or with alterations in host immune status caused by cancer immunotherapy.

This Research Topic will focus on innovative research data and clinical observations that expand upon, and in some cases, challenge existing dogma in the field of autoimmune neurology and neuroimmune responses to disease, including the interface of underlying immune dysfunction and disease.
