The advances in ocular imaging and biometry greatly benefit the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases. The technologies and instruments for ocular imaging and biometry allow us to precisely observe the anatomical structure and changes both in vitro and in vivo, assisting clinicians and researchers to investigate physiological phenomena and disease at a micrometer level. The principles of instruments for imaging and biometry vary and their applications and advantages differ. For example, optical coherence tomography (OCT) highlights extremely high resolution of images and high scan speed, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides panorama from orbit, external eye to the whole eyeball. Therefore, OCT is preferential to identify foci located at specific ocular layer, and MRI is commonly chosen to observe orbital diseases.
The goal of this Research Topic is to bring to readers up-to-date clinical and translational research on advances in imaging techniques and biometry of the orbit and eyeball and their applications in health care and eye diseases. Firstly, to introduce novel techniques and instruments in this field, describing the designated principles and validating the accuracy and feasibility, so that clinicians can utilize them accordingly. Secondly, to introduce interdisciplinary involving artificial intelligence, big data, molecular biological tests that shed light on the development and application of ocular imaging and biometry. Thirdly, to demonstrate the applications of imaging and biometric techniques in a specific health care setting or eye diseases, providing a reference for ophthalmologists in particular circumstances.
