Over the last years, our understanding of endothelium has greatly evolved. In the 50s, innovative studies of Palade and Gowan described for the first time the endothelium as a dynamic organ with diverse capabilities. The first studies of the endothelial function in humans involved invasive methods until 1992 when Celermajer et al., described the first testing of the endothelial function with a non-invasive method. Since then, an explosion of studies aimed to measure endothelial function and dysfunction in health and in diverse disease settings.

Cardiovascular and hematological disorders, as well as hematopoietic cell transplantation, are considered key fields in which endothelial dysfunction has been studied. The list of endothelial injury syndromes is constantly updated, including not only toxicity syndromes but also novel entities, such as the coronavirus disease - 19 (COVID-19).

Despite the plethora of studies, the clinical significance of endothelial dysfunction remains under investigation. ?etter understanding of current concepts and significance in clinical practice emerges as extremely important to set the ground for the development of therapeutic approaches specifically targeting the endothelium.

Several questions remain unanswered in this complex field. These include pathophysiological aspects, robust functional markers or biomarkers, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects. This is an interdisciplinary field, involving basic, translational, and clinical researchers across different specialties (internal medicine, infectious diseases, nephrology, hematology, transplantation). Therefore, collecting relevant articles on one Research Topic will greatly facilitate the interchange of new concepts and update state-of-the-art knowledge.

This Research Topic aims to gather Original Research, Systematic Review, Methods, Review, Mini Review, Policy and Practice Reviews, Hypothesis and Theory, Perspective, Clinical Trial, Case Report, General Commentary, and Opinion articles. Topics may include (but are not limited to) endothelial dysfunction or endothelial injury studies in the following areas:

• Novel entities recognized as endotheliopathies, such as COVID-19

• Cardiovascular disorders

• Hematological disorders

• Hematopoietic cell transplantation

• Chronic inflammatory disorders
