About this Research Topic
Advances in plant genomics and gene editing technologies have revolutionized breeding programs globally and are taking agriculture to new heights. Millions of SNPs have become available in all agronomically important crops, allowing development of high-density maps, identification of quantitative trait loci, and discovery of new genes in addition to facilitating multifarious genomic analyses. Concomitantly, remarkable technological improvements have occurred in gene editing strategies in the past decade and new developments are continuously being reported with unsurpassed speed. The most significant breakthrough happened in 2012 with the advent of the CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing system, which revolutionized both basic and applied research in various organisms.
With the two systems of gene editing available now, based on site-specific recombinases and site-specific nucleases, scientists can manipulate genes in ways hardly imaginable before. Most of these technological advances are successfully adopted in model plants and crop research for a wide variety of ambitious applications including development of innovative crops. We aim to compile Original Research articles and Reviews in the areas of plant genomics and gene editing where these new advancements have been adopted to bring desirable improvement in plant traits and have opened more doors for genetic improvement of traits.
To feed the burgeoning population and to ensure global food security in a changing climate scenario, scientists have adopted the latest tools and technologies (genomics and gene editing) to increase food production. These advanced tools have enhanced the possibilities of exploiting hitherto underutilized variation for genetic improvement of crops. Additionally, advanced gene and genome editing tools have opened new vistas of genetic improvement of crops. While these unprecedented successes have taken plant science research to new heights, their global adoption has been controversial and debatable in crop breeding research. The goal of this compilation is to highlight the cutting-edge original research to further increase our understanding in these areas while simultaneously assess the progress made in placing guidelines for the global adoption of the new genomics and gene editing tools.
This Research Topic aims to have a collation of original research articles demonstrating the use of cutting-edge plant genomics and/or gene editing technologies in tackling a specific problem such as improvement of a trait. Review papers describing the advances in plant genomics tools and gene editing technologies, including the latest CRISPR/Cas9 and TALEN gene-editing systems, will be considered. In addition, Opinion articles discussing the pros and cons of these technological advances and raising ethical concerns will be welcomed.
