There is a significant gap between fundamental studies and their clinical impact within various medical disciplines. Understanding cardiovascular physiology is the core of cardiology. Recent advances in cardiac physiology have made this discipline a truly interdisciplinary area of research, bridging together cardiovascular sciences, immunology, endocrinology, molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, electrophysiology, biophysics, cybernetics, whole animal studies, and 'omics' approaches. This has allowed researchers to gain an insight into the mechanistic basis of many physiological processes in the cardiovascular system. However, the gap between basic science and clinical research continues to widen. Deep insights into the physiology of heart rhythm, cardiac conduction system, interplay between the heart and the immune system, heart–brain axis, and autonomic nervous regulation are required to solve the challenges of atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death.
The goal of this Research Topic is to share new discoveries and concepts on the interplay between the heart and the immune system, in the context of heart rhythm regulation. Authors are invited to report new technological advances, and to foster new interdisciplinary areas in physiological research focusing on current challenges of arrhythmology and the role of the immune system in maintaining healthy heart rhythm and conduction. Authors should identify the most problematic areas of current arrhythmology, better understanding of which will promote translation of basic physiology into clinical research. This topic also aims to provide a venue for scientists who are elucidating the various aspects of heart rhythm physiology. Reports on interdisciplinary studies are highly encouraged. New disciplines and research directions may be proposed as a result of these contributions. Priority will be given to studies focusing on the interplay between the heart and the immune system with potential to translational research.

The editorial team believes that clearer insight into the role of immune cells in the heart may help solve the issues of atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death. Purely clinical studies, or papers with no insights into translational medicine, will not be considered for this Research Topic. Authors are encouraged to designate a special section in the manuscript to provide their opinion on transitional potential of their research.
