Microglia are considered among the most versatile cells in the brain and involved in series of central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Meanwhile, microglia are the key regulator in CNS homeostasis and the status change of these participators will lead to a huge of elements dysfunction within the cerebrum. Moreover, microglia possessed the capacity of morphological and physiological modification, such as reactivity and plasticity, to functionally adapt to their ever-changing surroundings and to play as an important regulator in the brain. In recent studies, the high reactivity or plasticity (e.g., morphological phenotyping change, M1/M2 polarization, etc.) of microglia has shown to have a highly close connection to neurodevelopmental disorders, neuropsychiatric conditions, chronic pain, infectious diseases, and responses after sterile brain injury, particularly in stroke and traumatic brain injury. Although multiple studies have increasingly implicated this fatal type of cells as a key player in conditions of brain diseases, contemporaneously, to better understand the diverse roles and physiological functions of microglia are emerging and crucial to determining their extensive roles in CNS injury.
In this Research Topic, we would like to focus on a better and deeper understanding of the reactivity and plasticity of microglia in regulating and interacting the CNS injury. Studies may cover novel investigations either mechanisms or regulators, and methods in microglia functions. We will propose the following theme, while will also be pleased to accept other related interesting themes as far as according to the title, “Modulation of microglia reactivity and plasticity in CNS injury”.
We welcome the submission of Original Research, Review, Protocol, Mini Review, Perspective and Brief Research Report articles that cover, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Molecular mechanisms underlying microglia reactivity and plasticity after Stroke and Traumatic brain injury
- Novel sight on the effect of microglia reactivity and plasticity in CNS injury
- Function of microglia in the therapeutic strategies on CNS injury
- Development of techniques and methods to study microglia reactivity and plasticity
