About this Research Topic
This special issue is designed to present the recent advance in the orthopedic management and the development of the new strategy, surgical technique and novel instrument, as a platform to expand the knowledge and share the foresight in the field of surgical innovation and novel orthopedic approaches. Our main focuses are:
1. The development of new instruments based on the application of biomedical engineering technology (such as laser welding, 3D-printing technology, sensor-based technology, artificial intelligence technology, tissue engineering, etc.), either for non-operative and operative treatment, and also for medical education in the orthopedic field.
2. The creation of new surgical techniques or interventions for the operative treatment with the evidence of improving clinical outcomes, especially in common orthopedic problems such as geriatric hip fracture, or in the challenging orthopedic issues such as non-union and infection.
3. The conception of new strategies and guidelines from the appropriate data collection methods and analysis, especially from meta-analysis of the up-to-date evidence.
We invite original research manuscripts, case reports and review articles focusing on specific areas related to surgical innovation and novel approaches for the treatment, either operative or non-operative modalities. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
• Novel instruments or basic research related to new implant design, fracture fixation technique, patient-specific instrument, and smart assistive devices.
• Pioneering surgical techniques and perioperative interventions designed for preoperative planning, intraoperative management, and postoperative care, for preventing perioperative complication and/or enhancing surgical outcomes.
• Risk factor analysis and strategic developments with data collection for common or difficult orthopedic problems, such as correction of pediatric deformity, non-union, geriatric hip fracture, osteoporosis and osteoporosis-related problems, and periprosthetic joint infection.
• Application of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, such as orthobiologic agent, stem cell, and artificial tissue, in orthopedic surgery.
• Innovative devices related to surgical skill simulation for improving orthopedic surgical education.
