Plant non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play vital roles in many aspects of plant life, such as plant development, stress responses, pathogen interaction, and genome evolution. During evolution, plant ncRNAs undergo gain or loss events, which may be the result of natural or artificial selection. The mechanisms of these events are quite intricate, such as de novo miRNAs arising from inverted duplication of target gene fragments, spontaneous fold-back of self-complementary sequences, or miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements. In recent years, a few studies have reported that ncRNAs from plants or pathogens have participated in the evolutionary arms race during the long-term coevolution. Plant ncRNAs may regulate target genes to defend against invasion or enter pathogens to suppress biochemical changes. Therefore, ncRNAs are becoming an increasingly fascinating topic to study cross-kingdom regulation. To figure out the mechanisms of ncRNAs neo- and sub-functionalization will expand our knowledge on genome evolution and reveal their potential roles in cross-kingdom regulation.
The goal of this Research Topic is to investigate the role of plant ncRNAs in genome evolution and cross-kingdom regulation. Thanks to the rapid development of sequencing technology and functional genomics, it is possible to identify the evolutionary events of ncRNAs and detect the communication between plants and other organisms. Furthermore, understanding the origin and function of ncRNAs would be vital for further crop breeding and disease control.
This Research Topic welcomes the submission of different article types (e.g. original research paper, perspectives, reviews, minireviews, commentaries, and opinion papers), on the following subtopics but not limited to:
• Omics studies to identify and analyze the potential roles of ncRNAs in cross-kingdom regulation
• Comparative genomics to understand the evolution of plants ncRNAs
• Bioinformatic approaches or databases to study ncRNAs in plants
• Molecular function studies to elucidate the roles of ncRNAs
