This collection will welcome and showcase a selection of high impact articles authored by leaders in the field. The work presented here highlights the broad diversity of research performed across the Sex and Gender Differences in Disease section, and aims to put a spotlight on the main areas of interest. This collection aims to further support Frontiers’ strong community by shining a spotlight on our authors' highly impactful research.

Highlights in Sex and Gender Differences in Disease 2021/22

Women have historically been underrepresented in cardiovascular clinical trials, resulting in a lack of sex-specific data. This is especially problematic in two situations, namely those where diseases manifest differently in women and men and those where biological differences between the sexes might affect the efficacy and/or safety of medication. There is therefore a pressing need for datasets with proper representation of women to address questions related to these situations. Clinical care data could fit this bill nicely because of their unique broad scope across both patient groups and clinical measures. This perspective piece presents the potential of clinical care data in sex differences research and discusses current challenges clinical care data-based research faces. It also suggests strategies to reduce the effect of these limitations, and explores whether clinical care data alone will be sufficient to close evidence gaps or whether a more comprehensive approach is needed.

Addressing persistent evidence gaps in cardiovascular sex differences research – the potential of clinical care data

ObjectiveTo investigate knowledge, perceptions and practices of parents of girls aged 11–18 years old in Greece toward HPV vaccination, and determine which factors are associated with parents' decision to vaccinate their daughters.</sec>MethodsA close-end questionnaire was constructed and telephone interviews were conducted upon informed consent. The sample was random, national, stratified by geographic region and representative of the general population of parents of girls aged 11–18. The data collected include: general knowledge, attitudes and perceptions concerning HPV and HPV vaccine, information regarding their daughters' HPV vaccination, and sociodemographic characteristics. Statistical analysis included descriptives and a logistic regression model to investigate which factors are associated with HPV vaccination.</sec>ResultsOverall, 1,000 parents participated in the study, 99.4% of which knew what HPV is and 98.8% knew there is a vaccine available against HPV. Furthermore, 47% of the parents stated that their daughters had been vaccinated against HPV, while further analysis revealed that only 35% had received all the recommended doses. In the logistic regression analysis, the following variables had a statistically significant association with HPV vaccination: perceived ease of contracting HPV (OR = 1.105), level of trust in medical profession regarding information on prevention (OR = 1.205), overall perception regarding importance of children's vaccination (OR = 0.618), internet/social media as a source of parent information regarding HPV (OR = 0.886), participant (parent) age (OR = 1.125), and daughter's treating physician's recommendation for HPV vaccination (OR = 7.319).</sec>ConclusionsHPV vaccination coverage is still suboptimal. Comprehension of the obstacles toward this goal is important and the role of healthcare professionals is crucial to increase acceptance.</sec>

Knowledge, Perceptions and Attitudes Toward HPV Vaccination: A Survey on Parents of Girls Aged 11–18 Years Old in Greece

BackgroundEpidemics and other complex emergencies historically have had a disproportionate impact on women and girls, increasing their vulnerability to gender-based violence (GBV). The COVID-19 pandemic has been no different, with reports of rising cases of GBV emerging worldwide. Already a significant problem in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and South Africa, GBV in these countries has been exacerbated by government restrictions intended to contain the spread of COVID-19. The purpose of this study was to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the availability of GBV prevention and response services from the perspective of the organizations that provide them.</sec>MethodsA cross-sectional online survey of people who work in GBV prevention and response in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and South Africa was administered from July to October 2020. A convenience sample was identified through web search, contacts of in-country consultants, and relevant listservs and technical working groups. Descriptive analyses were completed using SPSS.</sec>ResultsA total of 187 respondents completed the survey. Nearly all (98.9%) survey respondents reported that COVID-19 impacted their work. The majority (77.9%) stated that work decreased due to government restrictions or GBV services being deemed non-essential. The types of service most impacted were community-based prevention, shelters, and legal services. Survey respondents overwhelmingly agreed (99.3%) that COVID-19 impacted GBV prevalence and identified adolescents and women with disabilities as particularly vulnerable groups.</sec>ConclusionsGBV prevention and response services in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and South Africa were highly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, largely due to government restrictions and the failure of governments to deem GBV services as essential. Preparedness for future crises should ensure that GBV is adequately prioritized in the initial response in order to maintain service availability with special attention paid to at-risk populations.</sec>

Impact of COVID-19 on Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response Services in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and South Africa: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Introduction: Pharmacological treatment is an important component of secondary prevention in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) survivors. However, adherence to medication regimens is often suboptimal, reducing the effectiveness of treatment. It has been suggested that sex influences adherence to cardiovascular medication, but results differ across studies, and a systematic overview is lacking.Methods: We performed a systematic search of PubMed and EMBASE on 16 October 2019. Studies that reported sex-specific adherence for one or more specific medication classes for ACS patients were included. Odds ratios, or equivalent, were extracted per medication class and combined using a random effects model.Results: In total, we included 28 studies of which some had adherence data for more than one medication group. There were 7 studies for angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) (n = 100,909, 37% women), 8 studies for antiplatelet medication (n = 37,804, 27% women), 11 studies for beta-blockers (n = 191,339, 38% women), and 17 studies for lipid-lowering medication (n = 318,837, 35% women). Women were less adherent to lipid-lowering medication than men (OR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.82–0.92), but this sex difference was not observed for antiplatelet medication (OR = 0.95, 95% CI 0.83–1.09), ACEIs/ARBs (OR = 0.95, 95% CI 0.78–1.17), or beta-blockers (OR = 0.97, 95% CI 0.86–1.11).Conclusion: Women with ACS have poorer adherence to lipid-lowering medication than men with the same condition. There are no differences in adherence to antiplatelet medication, ACEIs/ARBs, and beta-blockers between women and men with ACS.
