Many plants and animals form beneficial associations with microorganisms that range widely in both form and function. Whether it be a single bacteria species, or a complex community of microorganisms, these microbiotas promote the health and fitness of their plant and animal hosts through an extensive molecular dialogue. This molecular dialogue is highly dynamic and sensitive to varied diurnal and seasonal environmental cues, including light cycles, temperature fluctuations, and feeding behaviors. The overarching goal of this Research Topic is to expand our knowledge and provide novel insight into how diurnal and seasonal environmental cues impact the molecular dialogue between microbiotas and their respective hosts.
Recently, there has been intense interest in understanding how environmental rhythms influence the interactions between microorganisms and their plant and animal hosts. We now understand that the microbial composition of the microbiota oscillates in accordance with environmental light cycles, and seasons. Moreover, the chemical dialogue between microorganisms and their hosts has also been shown to oscillate in accordance with environmental rhythms, and the dysregulation of this rhythmic chemical dialogue significantly impacts host health and fitness. To gain better insight into how environmental rhythms influence host-microbiota dynamics we seek to synthesize the breadth of model systems (both established and emerging) and approaches (systems level, molecular level) with the varied mechanisms in which biological rhythms occur (diurnal, seasonal).
With this Research Topic, we intend to highlight research and review articles from both established and emerging model systems that contribute to understanding the impact of environmental/biological rhythms on host-microbial interactions. Research articles that seek to develop new methods and/or meta-analysis of existing datasets on rhythmic host-microbiome interactions are strongly encouraged.
