The purpose of this Research Topic is to provide a platform for scientific publication of theoretical and empirical analyses on the topic of sustainable use of oceans and seas, while protecting marine resources and marine ecosystems. The bigger societal aim of this Research Topic is to contribute to the implementation of sustainable solutions to marine management as stated by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in particular SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources, for sustainable development.
In particular, we are interested in scientific articles that adopt a multidisciplinary orientation towards identifying holistic management approaches of marine resources, over time and space. Authors that address ecosystem-based, area-based, integrated, adaptive, strategic and participatory techno-financial and socio-economic perspectives of these processes are encouraged to send in their contributions. Topics of research can be situated within the policy frameworks and initiatives of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the national processes of Marine Spatial Planning and the EU Blue Growth Initiative.
This Research Topic aims to be a high profile publication to be used and referenced in a large group of academic/ policy/ governance networks such as Marine Spatial Planning processes and marine business development networks. Through analyzing alternative means of allocating spatial and temporal distribution of human activities in marine areas this Research Topic intends to achieve a better understanding of how ecological, economic, and social objectives can be integrated.
