Plants as sessile organisms experience various abiotic stresses which limit their growth and productivity. Abiotic stresses due to climate change frequently cause osmotic stress, such as drought and high salinity, in plants. To survive under osmotic stress plants display dynamic adaptation responses at the physiological and molecular levels. Adaptation to osmotic stress requires coordinated modulations in a plant's metabolism, cell growth, division, and differentiation, all of which are dependent on gene control systems that are regulated by complex mechanisms. Many stress-responsive genes have been shown to regulate the responses to osmotic stress in plants.
In recent years, high-throughput sequencing technologies have developed rapidly, and multi-omics provides insights into the latest research platform for plants. Simultaneously, with the continuous application of conventional molecular biology techniques, we are moving towards a better understanding of osmotic stress responses. However, the precise mechanisms and networks that regulate the osmotic stress responses in plants are still not fully understood. This Research Topic will collect papers which discuss recent advances in our understanding of the function of osmotic stress-responsive genes, genome-wide analysis, the molecular mechanisms of osmotic stress-associated signal transduction, and other related topics in osmotic stress response in plants.
Authors are especially encouraged to submit manuscripts reporting the molecular mechanisms in the osmotic stress signal transduction and its network, including reviews and original research articles. Contributions on other related topics aimed at advancing our understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of the osmotic stress responses in plants are also welcomed. The themes to be covered in this collection include:
• Genetic and/or molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying signal transduction in response to osmotic stress;
• The molecular and/or biological function of novel osmotic stress-responsive genes in plants;
• Genome-wide analyses under various osmotic stress conditions to better understand osmotic stress responses through the dynamics of gene expressions in plants;
• Generation and confirmation of osmotic stress-tolerant transgenic plants using the newest techniques;
• Biochemical and/or physiological assay of osmotic stress-responsive proteins in plants.
Studies that report responses to abiotic stress treatments without contributing to the mechanistic, or genetic, understanding of the responses observed will not be considered for peer review.
