Perioperative brain protection has been a concern for researchers and practitioners in recent years. Children, like adults, can also experience central nervous system complications after surgery or anesthesia. Despite the fact that there has been a certain number of research in this area, the following aspects have not yet been clearly elucidated and should be further investigated.
First, more research works should focus on the clinical manifestations, related mechanisms and preventions of short-term or long-term CNS (central nervous system) complications such as perioperative depression, acute or chronic pain, sleep disorder, delirium and cognitive function change in children. In addition, different monitor methods and their value in prediction, diagnosis, evaluation of CNS function during perioperative period have been under-researched. Moreover, surgeries or anesthesia strategies with neuro-protection in operating room or outpatient department to alleviated Central Nervous System postoperative complications, etc can be further explored.
The current Research Topic intends to highlight the CNS complications or brain protections in children during the perioperative period and recent advances in basic and clinical research while emphasizing novel experimental or treatment strategies worthy of further investigation. As CNS complications and temporary or long-term brain impacts caused by not only anesthesia but also surgeries, we intend to gather pre-clinical and clinical trials including novel drugs and non-drugs methods, in-patient and out-patient procedure anesthesia protocols, advanced CNS function monitoring methods, which can improve and promote CNS rehabilitation of children.
This Research Topic welcomes submissions of high-qualitied reviews and research articles, with a particular focus on neuroprotection and CNS functional monitor and rehabilitation in children during the perioperative period, but are not limited to the following subtopics:
• Drugs and non-drugs interventions to alleviate perioperative CNS disorders, including: depression, pain, sleep disorder and cognitive functions
• Postoperative agitation assessments and managements or related molecular mechanism; Postoperative evaluation of children’s intelligence and cognitive function or related molecular mechanism
• Occurrence and managements of postoperative neurological complications after different kinds of surgeries and anesthesia methods
• Advanced CNS function monitoring or neuro-protective measures during perioperative periods
• Innovative approaches to pediatric anesthesia outside the operating room
