Anesthesiologists play a crucial role in safeguarding perioperative and critical care. However, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) may not have the recommended and necessary supply of physicians, including anesthesiologists. For example, LMICs in sub-Saharan Africa have 0.1 to 1.4 anesthesia providers per 100,000 citizens. This ratio is significantly below the Lancet Commission’s target of 20 anesthesia providers per 100,000 citizens required to provide safe surgery. In addition, a shortage of anesthesiologists is a barrier to addressing intensive care unit (ICU) services in LMICs.
The goal of the current Research Topic is to showcase the latest research advances, clinical, and educational practices that can help address these disparities and insufficient supply of anesthesiologists in low- and middle-income countries to ensure the provision of safe and effective perioperative and critical care services.
Researchers are encouraged to submit Original Research, Reviews, as well as exceptional Case-Reports that are relevant to this article collection that will cover topics such as (but are not limited to):
• Perioperative Care
• Critical Care
• Innovative Technology in low resource settings
• Anesthesia Workforce
• Critical Care Workforce
• Global partnerships
• Sustainability
