Atherosclerosis is the pathological manifestation of hardening and loss of elasticity of the arteries, forming plaques. These atheromas can rupture, stimulating blood clotting, and thus forming a thrombus- a process known as thrombosis. Significantly, atherosclerosis and thrombosis are strongly intertwined, with one often leading to the other in a complex cascade that affects vascular health. In essence, atherosclerosis sets the stage for thrombosis, and together they pose a significant risk for serious cardiovascular events. Thrombosis is often an insidious process that poses a tremendous challenge to clinical management, making accurate and early diagnosis an indispensable pillar in the treatment of these diseases. Improving efficacy and diagnostic accuracy combines biochemical, radiological and pathological assessments to determine the extent and severity of the disease, formulate prognostic estimates and guide the optimal treatment strategy. Well-organized interventions, surgical or interventional procedures, and lifestyle changes all have great potential to mitigate the adverse sequelae associated with atherosclerosis and thrombosis.
To optimize cardiovascular health and improve patient prognosis, our research topic aims to promote early detection and accuracy of atherosclerosis and thrombosis, looking forward to innovative research on atherosclerosis and thrombosis to find therapeutic options and preventive measures including pharmacological therapies, non-surgical interventions, and interventional treatments.
In this context, we invite original research articles and comprehensive review papers that address various aspects related to the diagnosis and treatment of arteriosclerosis and thrombosis. Manuscripts focusing on, but not limited to, the following topics are welcome:
