Under the influence of geostress, seepage, weathering and artificial disturbance, rock materials inevitably develop defects (fissures, cracks, pores, voids, faults, etc.), which greatly reduce the physical and mechanical properties of rock materials. With the development of large-scale engineering construction and resource exploitation, there is an increasing demand for high-strength rock masses. Thus, the development and refinement of mechanics theories pertaining to rock materials with defects are necessary.
The substratum of these large-scale engineering projects predominantly comprises various types of rock mass materials. Those typical defects of rock mass materials often manifest at scales beyond the mesoscopic and microscopic scales but below the macroscopic scale, making it difficult to discern statistical laws governing their behavior. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the reasonable statistical scale of volume units when constructing the theoretical system of mechanics. At the same time, testing the physical and mechanical parameters of rock materials with defects will also facilitate us to have a clear understanding of the reliability of the project. These related research and innovations provide crucial insights for stability analysis in engineering construction.
Hence, the aim of this Research Topic is to publish Original Research and Review articles on the physical and mechanical properties of rock materials with defects, including test instruments and methods, mechanical properties of rock and rock mass, theoretical analysis of mechanics, numerical simulation and intelligent algorithms, engineering rock mass techniques, and prediction and prevention techniques for rock mass disaster.
