The last decade has seen the development of new frontiers based on the relationship between genetics and responses of the immune system to disease, infection or a foreign antigen. For instance, advances in genomics and sequencing platforms have accelerated the understanding of how different genomic signatures might affect the development of autoimmune diseases. Similarly, better human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing has opened new avenues of investigation in transplantation. Unraveling the genetic basis of immune response as well as the identification of genetic variations that result in immune defects are fundamental to the identification of new therapeutic targets for immune-mediated diseases.
Interactions between components of the human immune system that determine disease susceptibility shed light on how different arms of the immune system might contribute to the pathogenesis of various diseases. This Research Topic aims to collect articles that present the most cutting-edge, relevant, and impactful pieces on the role and study of immunogenetic polymorphisms affecting differential susceptibility to human diseases. This includes basic, translational and clinical studies on the major histocompatibility complex, as well as investigations of how genetic variability affects the immune response. We welcome contributions of (1) Original Research, (2) Hypothesis and Theory, (3) Data and Research Reports, (4) Opinions, (5) Commentaries, and (6) Review articles. We also welcome Perspective Essays and Practice Reviews from diverse scientists working in immunogenetics whose viewpoints could be beneficial to the early-career scientific community.
