Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a heterogeneous group of bilayer membrane nanoparticles secreted by almost all cell types. EVs play an important role in cell-to-cell communication. They interact with and modify the behavior of target cells at close and distant sites. The composition of EVs is determined by their biogenetic pathway and the microenvironment of the parental cell. Regardless of their origin, EVs carry multiple cargoes or expose on their surface a diverse set of bioactive molecules, including lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins.
Emerging research provides valuable insights to understand the role of EVs in physiological and pathological conditions. Understanding the role of EVs in diseases will provide the basis for EVs utilization in the diagnosis and treatments of diseases.
Recent advances on technologies for detection, isolation, and characterization of EVs are significantly expanding, supporting research in the understanding of their potential in diagnosis and therapy of multiple diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular, autoimmune, neurological disorders, and infectious diseases.
Our Research Topic aims to provide comprehensive and critical knowledge of the pre-clinical and clinical application of EVs to the research of pathophysiology of different diseases, evaluate their diagnostic and therapeutic potential, and review the progress in this field. The published research articles would bring also new insight into the genetic and epigenetic predictors driven by EVs involved in the etiology of multiple diseases.
