About this Research Topic
Context/Background: Over the last decade, our capabilities for imaging have increased dramatically due to both technological development and selective imaging capabilities. Imaging of the pancreas has historically been difficult, however, novel technologies have recently been successfully applied to pancreas and islet imaging. Building upon the increased capabilities as well as unprecedented access to human tissues, the field of diabetes and metabolic disease research has experienced significant growth in the ability to selectively target and image the islet in its native environment.
Goal: The overall goal of this Research Topic is to capture the breadth of novel approaches for imaging pancreatic islets in their native environment to inform our understanding of the diabetic state using both normal and diseased tissues in the form of Original Research, Review and Mini Review articles.
• Approaches for clinical imaging of the human pancreas
• Approaches for human pancreatic islet imaging in vivo (e.g., transplant models to study islet function and dysfunction)
• Targeted approaches for high resolution islet imaging in situ (e.g., CODEX, imaging mass cytometry, imaging mass spec)
• Novel methods and tools for studying the intact pancreas (e.g., slice technology, biosensors)
• Understanding the landscape of the intact pancreas (e.g., optical clearing, pancreas architecture studies in slices)
