Neonatology is a field rapidly evolving in both the clinical and research areas. These aspects are closely intertwined and complement each other with the aim of producing evidence-based practice. Clinical trials depend on innovative and impactful translational research ideas that are developed to solve key problems and to bridge the knowledge gaps in practice. Fast-tracking of research output using accurate models of diseases not only increases our understanding of the science of neonatal diseases but also creates the biological plausibility basis for the design of clinical trials to improve neonatal care.
This Research Topic is aimed at highlighting original research and innovation in models for pre-clinical trial studies or prototypes that are designed to answer research questions expediently with reference to the real clinical scenarios. Using various models, engineering of tissues to replace injured organs, de novo creation of artificial womb and innovative medical appliances have evolved to improve care we deliver to the newborn infant. Mathematical models and algorithms are primers of software in new equipment and diagnostic devices, such as automatic oxygen control in ventilators, heart rate variability monitoring for sepsis and sucking-swallowing sounds captured during breastfeeding that are already introduced into current neonatal practice. The underlying principles of these models are yet to be clearly disseminated to practitioners of this field. Animal models are highly valuable in translational research to further understand the various disease pathologies and to advance the practice of neonatology. Studies on the physiology and effects of delayed cord clamping on research models are crucial because this intervention potentially leads to change in current practice. Other models for the study of asphyxia, necrotizing enterocolitis and sepsis are critical for the development of more precise diagnostic tools and new therapies to improve outcomes. Finally, animal models in studying new drugs are instrumental in novel drug discoveries and trials for their safety and efficacy in advancing neonatal health.
