Membrane processes are the fastest growing separation technologies for a broad range of applications, including seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, industrial applications, biorefineries, biotech and food processes. Fouling is caused by the accumulation of rejected material/particles on a membrane surface or in membrane pores during filtration and it represents one of the major drawbacks of membrane systems. The fouling leads to a decrease in membrane performance, contributing to the increase in the operational costs, increase of energy required, increase of the chemical cleaning and the reduction of the membrane lifetime. Despite the recent progress in the field, fouling is still considered the major challenge encountered in membrane processes.
This Research Topic aims at publishing selected and novel research contributions on fouling in membrane filtration processes. The topic is extended to different membrane processes employed for the treatment of different feeds (seawater, wastewater, fresh water, industrial wastewater, brine, produced water, process stream in food, biorefineries etc).
