Epigenetics refers to the study of heritable changes beyond the DNA sequence, which are reversible and include key processes of DNA methylation, chromatin modifications, nucleosome positioning, and alterations in non-coding RNA profiles. Disruptions in epigenetic processes can lead to altered gene expression and cellular neoplastic transformation. Epigenetic memory is an essential process of life that governs the inheritance of predestined functional characteristics of healthy cells and the newly acquired properties of cells. Epigenetic information is usually affected by cancers and other diseases, from parental to progeny cells.
While there has been enormous progress made, there are still some gaps in our knowledge of epigenetic memory and cellular processes. For example, the identity of unique epigenetic memory factors, epigenome coding enzymes/co-factors/scaffolding proteins involved in the assembly of defined “epigenetic memorysomes”, the epigenome marks that constitute collections of genes regulated to epigenetic memories in the specific cell types and physiological conditions. A better understanding of the molecular basis for epigenetic memory will play a central role in improving diagnostics and prognostics of disease states and aid the development of targeted therapeutics of complex diseases.
This Research Topic aims to present the latest research in the field of epigenetic memory, especially in human diseases. It will include, but not limited to cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, autoimmune disorders, ageing and developmental disorders. Besides, the Research Topic will consist of recent insights on the establishment and alternation of epigenetic control, especially in regards to pathologies.
