The relationship between COVID-19 pandemic and sleep is probably bidirectional.
Several studies showed the severe impact of COVID-19 on sleep quality, chronic fatigue, anxiety, and depressive symptoms in caregivers, healthcare staff, patients affected by chronic diseases, and healthy subjects due to prolonged lockdown. However, scarce objective and prospective data were shown. Furthermore, the recent outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic with tens of thousands of infected patients has most likely directly affected sleep and circadian rhythms in patients with SARS-CoV-2. Impaired consciousness ranging from somnolence to confusion, delirium, stupor, and coma has been reported in almost 15% of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. In the initial studies based on clinical features, the physiopathology of acute respiratory disorder induced by either highly homogenous coronaviruses or other pathogens showed that excessive inflammation, oxidation, and an exaggerated immune response very likely contribute to COVID-19 pathology. This leads to a cytokine storm and subsequent progression to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and is often fatal. Previous studies showed that melatonin treatment has anti-inflammatory and antioxidative protective effects against ARDS caused by viral and other pathogens by reducing vessel permeability, anxiety, sedation use, and improving sleep quality, which might also be beneficial for better clinical outcomes for COVID-19 patients.
This Research Topic aims to improve our understanding of the relationship between COVID-19 and sleep and circadian rhythms.
