Pulmonary rehabilitation is a comprehensive intervention based on a thorough patient assessment followed by patient-tailored therapies, which include, but are not limited to, exercise training, education, and behavior change, designed to improve the physical and psychological condition of people with chronic respiratory disease and to promote the long-term adherence of health-enhancing behaviors. This evidence-based intervention is however poorly accessible to patients with chronic respiratory diseases and its benefits are difficult to sustain in the long term. From the advances in recent years and the challenges brought by the 2020 pandemic, emerging technologies and add-on interventions are playing a relevant role in overcoming these difficulties.
The collection aims to advance the state of knowledge and expertise in the field of technologies (monitoring devices, eHealth, mHealth, telerehabilitation) and innovative interventions (physical activity counseling, airway clearance, inspiratory muscle training, balance training, non-invasive ventilation, etc) applied to pulmonary rehabilitation, from the clinical evaluation to patient-tailored therapies, regardless of the setting (inpatient, outpatient, home-based). This Research Topic looks to offer an open opportunity for students, researchers, and other professionals working in developing, evaluating, and implementing add-on technologies and interventions within the field of pulmonary rehabilitation that may have a relevant impact on real-life applications in chronic respiratory care.
This Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Reviews, and Data Reports, amongst others. Potential topics include but are not limited to:
? Technologies and devices for pulmonary rehabilitation;
? Impact of technologies on patients' accessibility to pulmonary rehabilitation
? Emerging technologies and interventions to promote long-term adherence to health-enhancing behaviors
? Design and evaluation of virtual environments and serious games for pulmonary rehabilitation;
? Innovative tests and instruments for the multidimensional assessment of patients (PROMs, PREMs, field tests, etc)
? Effectiveness of add-on interventions such as coaching, telemonitoring, Tele counseling, telerehabilitation
? Pulmonary telerehabilitation as a model of care
? The role of caregivers in innovative pulmonary rehabilitation models
? Health care system questions when organizing new models of pulmonary rehabilitation
? (Evidence-based) clinical practice recommendations for new models of pulmonary rehabilitation
? Security, privacy, and ethical issues associated with the use of technologies as part of pulmonary rehabilitation
