About this Research Topic
As one of the world's most important crops, maize supplied both food and feed for humans and livestock. The demand for sustainable production of maize seeds with high yield and nutritional quality is rising in response to the worldwide rapidly growing population. Therefore, a deeper understanding of maize seed development and grain filling is critical for its genetic improvement. Our knowledge of maize seed production has improved dramatically in recent years, due to the sequencing of many high-quality genomes of different maize inbred lines and the use of genome editing technologies. This has paved the way for future maize yield and nutrition improvements.
This Research Topic will be focused on the advances in maize seed development and genetic improvement obtained by cloning and functionally characterizing the genes controlling maize embryo and endosperm development, studying mechanisms of grain filling and maturation, and dissecting natural variations for genetic improvement of kernel nutrition quality and weight.
We welcome submissions of different types of manuscripts including original research articles, reviews, and methods, including but not limited to:
• Maize seed pericarp, embryo and endosperm development and communications
• Storage metabolite synthesis and deposition
• Natural variations of maize kernel nutrition quality and weight
• Genetic improvement and molecular breeding of maize seeds
