Probiotic, prebiotics, postbiotics with preventive medicine potential are emerging as an indispensable tool in addressing the intestinal diseases. In the last few years, they became more and more popular as nutritional supplements to achieve reduction of gastrointestinal complaints and intestinal diseases. Recent and ongoing studies are enabling new frontiers of better understanding of the impact of probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics on the modulation of the intestinal microbiota and subsequent effects on the host’s health. In line with these advances, the industry growth of probiotic, prebiotics, postbiotics is estimated at 7% annually over the next ten years. Intestinal barrier is the first line of protection of the intestinal tract, which consists of the physical barrier, chemical barrier, immunological barrier, and microbial barrier. Intestinal barrier plays a significant role of taking part in intestinal immune system and regulating the balance between the host and probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics. Intestinal barrier dysfunction is recognized as an early or initiating step in communicating bacterial diversity-dependent changes to the host. Although several reports have demonstrated that the efficacy of probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics in vivo and in vitro test, the association between the probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics and intestinal barrier function have not been fully investigated.
This Research Topic aims to provide an overview of the current advances in the understanding of the effect of Probiotics, Prebiotics and Postbiotics on intestinal barrier function, with a particular focus on the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gut barrier dysfunction.
In this Research Topic, we welcome submissions of Original Research articles, Reviews, Opinions and Methods articles that address, but are not limited to the following sub-topics.
