Periodontal disease is a widespread public health problem, a chronic inflammatory disease resulting in progressive attachment and alveolar bone loss. The Fact sheet N°318/April 2012 of the WHO on Oral health states that “Severe periodontal (gum) disease, which may result in tooth loss, is found in 15–20% of middle-aged (35-44 years) adults. Globally, about 30% of people aged 65–74 have no natural teeth.”
Presently it is considered that the prevalence of periodontal disease may have been underestimated by as much as 50% and considers that gum disease is a significant public health concern. Moreover, several research studies have associated gum disease with various systemic diseases and conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, chronic kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, adverse pregnancy outcomes, obesity, metabolic syndrome and cancer. For this issue, we encourage the submission of original research reports, review articles, commentaries, perspectives or short communications in the following topics (but not limited to):

- Risk factors for periodontal disease
- Prevention of periodontal disease
- The inter-relationship between periodontal disease and systemic diseases
