The population of older adults are growing faster than any other age group in the world. At present, the world's population over 60 years old accounts for 8.5%, equaling to 617 million people. This number is expected to increase more than three times to reach 2 billion by 2050. Moreover, the proportion of the older population aged over 75 years will be quadrupling in the next decade. These elderly citizens may require an increased need in health care support caused by associated disease. However, despite the rapid growth of the older population aged over 75 years in China and worldwide, evidence regarding the determinants of their health and wellbeing is still insufficient compared with those aged 60s. Therefore, it is important to study the epidemiological characteristics and related risk factors of health and explore the underlying biological mechanism among the population aged 75 years and older.
This Research Topic will focus on the description of epidemiological characteristics of chronic diseases, mental health, cognitive status, and other important health conditions of the population aged over 75 years, as well as exploring the associations between lifestyle, novel biomarkers, and health status. In addition, studies on disability status and care needs among the population aged over 75 years are welcomed. We are also expecting epidemiological studies for the health status, that will provide a scientific evidence of the risk factors of longevity and the underlying biological mechanism in this specific population group.
We hope that the findings from the research topic will help the health-care practitioners and police makers to improve actions of health intervention and promotion among older populations in local regions and worldwide.
We welcome submissions of Review, Mini-Review and Original Research articles covering, but not limited to, the following topics:
• Descriptive studies of characteristics of the older population in China and worldwide, including physical health, mental health, and quality of life based on regionally representative population samples aged over 75 years
• Descriptive studies of main disability status and care needs of the older population in China and worldwide
• Analytic studies (cross-sectional studies, cohort studies, case-control studies, etc) to explore the associations between potential risk factors, life styles, and health status among the older population
• Population-based studies to investigate novel biomarkers on prediction, prevention, diagnosis, or prognosis for disease risks among the older, especially through genomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, or proteomics.
