Given the success of Volume I of this Research Topic, and how rapidly the subject area is evolving, we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume II: Systems Modeling: Approaches and Applications

The development of modeling tools has permitted an increased understanding of how components in different systems interact and behave. Thus, systems modeling has led to advances in several areas, such as medicine, biotechnology, and engineering. Applications include the study of ecological models, diseases and the impact of treatments, microorganism responses to specific environments, and the interactions between bio-molecules.

In this collection, we welcome contributions in the form of original research and methods papers that highlight the impact of computational tools and the usefulness of modeling to decipher the inner workings of biological systems. By showcasing articles covering a diverse range of systems, from small models composed of few molecules to large systems formed by thousands of elements, we aim to demonstrate the advantages provided by the employment of systems modeling.

This collection will cover:

1) new modeling approaches, including:

· modeling and simulation methods

· analysis and evaluation tools

· data mining and information gathering approaches

· model curation

2) the application of modeling to relevant bio-systems

· metabolism and signaling

· gene regulation

· disease and disease-agent transmission

· ecological systems, including microbial consortia and social systems

· neural systems

Keywords: systems modeling, simulation, bio-systems

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
