The development of functionally distinct membrane-bound compartments, called organelles, is a hallmark of eukaryotic cells. Each organelle performs novel functions and contains highly specialized proteins, lipids and cofactors. Organelles are morphologically and functionally distinct and coordinate to meet different cellular needs. The cell coordinates diverse intracellular activities via tight regulation of the abundance, composition and position of each organelle. Unlike animals, plants are sessile and have to withstand various environmental stress conditions. To adapt to the changing environment, the behavior, abundance and composition of organelles in plant cells are dynamically regulated and adjusted to maintain cell functionality. In addition, different plants have evolved organelles with different forms and functions, which constitute the biodiversity of plant organelles. Therefore, organelle biogenesis, function and biodiversity are fundamental and critical to every plant cell.
This Research Topic aims to highlight the latest advances in our understanding of organelle biogenesis, function and biodiversity. For model plants, we welcome studies on the mechanisms underlying how proteins, lipids and cofactors regulate organelle biogenesis and function in the context of plant cells. Additionally, we ask how both inter-organellar communication and extracellular signaling pathways regulate the abundance, composition and position of each organelle. For non-model plant cells, we welcome studies revealing organelle biodiversity in terms of organelle morphology, function and biogenesis.
We welcome diverse types of articles including Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Methods, Perspective and Opinion. The Research Topic will cover the following areas:
