Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen that poses a serious threat to public health. It affects different human organs particularly the lungs, causing pneumonia which usually develops into septicemia in intensive care unit (ICU) residents. It mainly infects the peritoneal cavity then rapidly disseminates to the lungs and spleen, it replicates to produce a septic shock. There are few reports on the virulence of A. baumannii clinical isolates, and little is known about the mechanism regulating virulence and drug resistance. Infection is characterized by a rapid onset within 36 hours, and progressive symptoms that lead to a mortality rate ranging from 40% to 60%. Moreover, A. baumannii rapidly develops resistance to multiple antibiotics and is now globally regarded as a serious multidrug-resistant pathogen. The ongoing pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has increased the risk of hospitalized patients developing pneumonia caused by A. baumannii. These factors prompted the World Health Organization to designate A. baumannii as a top priority for the development of new medical countermeasures, such as a vaccine. A thorough understanding of Acinetobacter baumannii pathogenicity is the key to identifying novel targets to combat this multidrug-resistant pathogen.
