Over the years we have witnessed several technological innovations in agriculture to assist breeders. From overcoming biotic and abiotic stresses, to enhancing the productivity and overall yield of crops to achieve global food and nutritional security. With the plethora of sequenced plant genomes, omics driven technologies are playing a significant role in addressing the limitations of conventional plant breeding approaches, and providing genetic resources for crop improvement on a larger scale. However the complexity of plant genomes and the identification of genes for agronomically important traits is an important task which requires state-of-the art genomic and transcriptomic tools.
The use of biological systems to produce products of commercial relevance (i.e. biomanufacturing) is a key component of the biotechnology industry. This manufacturing approach is used by the energy, material, pharmaceutical, food, agriculture, and cosmetic industries. In this Research Topic we welcome researchers to submit manuscripts that are focused on genomic and transcriptomic approaches for the improvement of industrial crops and products. Crops and products of interest include: fiber, forest, and energy crops, industrial oilseeds, rubber and resins, and cultivated medicinal and aromatic plants. We are particularly interested in studies describing the following omics technology for industrial crops improvements:
· Genomic (structural, functional and comparative) and Transcriptomics approach in stress tolerance
· Expression of various transcripts (mRNAs, miRNAs, and lncRNAs), RNA seq
· DeepSuper SAGE transcriptomic analyses
· QTLs for stress resistance
· Morphological traits and SSR
· Molecular mapping, MAS, and map-based cloning in crops
Our aim with this Research Topic is to provide a comprehensive overview of omics technologies as well as (potential) applications of these technologies in industrial crop improvement strategies, particularly across the following research themes:
1. Industrial crop management practices
2. Breeding and genetics of cultivated industrial crops
3. Response of cultivated industrial crops to abiotic
4. Sustainable cropping systems
5. New techniques for the propagation of industrial crops
6. Discovery or development of new industrial crops
7. Extraction methods of metabolites from industrial crops
8. Crop and forestry biorefinery
Please note: Descriptive studies that report responses of growth, yield or quality to agronomical treatments will not be considered if they do not progress physiological understanding of these responses. Articles on crop storage, transportation and usage, and cropping systems, do not fall within the scope of the journal.
