The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most serious public health crises in modern human history, with about 200 million confirmed cases and over 4 million deaths globally within the timespan of 1.5 years. The pandemic, associated with lockdown and economic recessions, aggravated pre-existing weaknesses of health systems and exacerbated health inequalities. Along with social and public health measures, occupational health services were crucial in protecting the workers in the high-risk sectors including healthcare, public service, hospitality, travel, education and informal sector. It is important for the researchers of public health, environmental health and occupational health to investigate the local, national and global responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and derive lessons for the future preparedness and response to outbreaks of similar scale. Special attention should be given to high-risk and vulnerable workers, including those in low- and middle-income countries and migrant workers who lack formal labour protections.
This Research Topic aims to understand challenges, opportunities and lessons for occupational health policy-makers, researchers and practitioners learning from the COVID-19 pandemic. We welcome multidisciplinary and observational studies including review, survey, retrospective cohort study, case-control study, cross-sectional study, case series, ecological study, and qualitative study. We are particularly interested in studies providing the strategic direction of future outbreak preparedness and response at the national and international level.
Contributors are invited to use the formats of an Original Research article, Brief Research Report, Review, or Opinion paper. Studies addressing the following themes are strongly encouraged:
• Occupational health and safety during and/or after the COVID-19 pandemic;
• Lessons for occupational health and safety derived from the COVID-19 pandemic;
• Health equity and occupational health during and/or after the COVID-19 pandemic;
• Occupational health and universal health coverage preparing for future pandemics;
• International cooperation of occupational health and safety in post COVID-19 era;
• Medical, social and/or legal issues of COVID-19 as an occupational disease;
• High-risk sectors affected by the COVID-19 pandemic;
• Vulnerable workers and workplaces affected by the COVID-19 pandemic;
• Strategies, policies and services to protect the vulnerable workers including those in informal sector and migrant workers; and
• The impact of the transition to telework during the COVID-19 pandemic on occupational health sand safety.
