This Research Topic focuses on the unique potential of the Freshwater Science of the African continent, as well as highlighting niche freshwater communities located predominantly or exclusively in Africa. The main purpose of this research topic is to bring together expert research on African freshwater science by scientists from both within and outside Africa, and thereby, bring attention to the contribution of African freshwater science to the global freshwater community. This collection of articles will be useful in promoting wider collaboration and networking among freshwater scientists conducting research in Africa. The collection will also be of value as a reference for future freshwater research in the continent and guide those seeking to establish research partnerships and collaborations or explore the potential of discoveries in African freshwater science in their research endeavors.

This Research Topic includes all topics in the Freshwater Science scope which can be located here:

The main topics of importance include but are not limited to:
• Physical, chemical, and biological properties of the Freshwater Environment.
• Innovative enhancements and applications of techniques that aid in ecological assessment and monitoring, conservation, and management of freshwater ecosystems.
• The development of indices or rapid tools for biomonitoring.
• Inclusive societal/cultural engagement in freshwater ecosystem knowledge generation, management, and policy.
• Multiple stressors, interactions, and management.
