Dry Eye Syndrome is a complex multifactorial disease affecting millions of persons worldwide. Environmental factors such as pollution, biochemicals, and hormone disorders among others are closely related to its etiology and its pathophysiology. Although many etiopathological mechanisms are proposed, there is still a lack of information regarding this disease. New clinical and basic approaches are currently being proposed to identify new mechanistic insights into this pathology. The articles presented here will include new, essential and practical information regarding epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, classification, diagnostic tests and therapeutic strategies useful for both clinical and basic settings. Translational manuscripts are also welcomed.

The goal of this Research Topic is to achieve more understanding in a) the pathophysiology, immunonology and cell biology involved in the genesis of dry eye disease and b) the molecular basis of dry eye disease, novel diagnostic tests and emerging therapies.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

- Inflammation

- Epidemiology

- Nutritional supplementation

- Meibonian glad dysnfunction

- Tear substitutes and hemoderivatives

- Novel imaging and diagnostics

Keywords: Cornea, Tear film, Dry eye, disease, TBUT

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
